A Spell is Cast
No matter how safe and anonymous she managed to make her life, Snow White was never destined to escape her queen. That was the conclusion she came to when she woke up one morning in Miriam Weiss' life and body. The transformation was immediately recognizable to her as magic, and though she couldn't be entirely sure that it was her stepmother who had cast the spell, experience made her believe it was. By all rights, Miriam's life was not a terrible one in which to be trapped. There were no castles or kingdoms to have lost inheritance of, and a new face was sure to keep her out of the queen's reach.
Miriam's Tale Though having a mother was a necessity for birth, Miriam Weiss has never known one. During the cesarean section that brought Miriam into the world, her mother, Nora, began to hemorrhage, and the doctors were unable to save her. Growing up with just a father was never strange to little Miriam, not even after she entered school and had the chance to meet her classmates' mothers. Instead, she always valued the fact that she was allowed to become whoever she liked without the influence of an older woman. Her father encouraged her to dress in whatever fashion she liked and fostered her interests, no matter how strange or implausible, which was not always something her mothered peers were afforded. When Miriam wanted to be phoenix wrangler, her father made sure she had a little pair of gloves made of "fire-proof material", and when she brought home a pair of kittens tucked into her overalls, she was allowed to keep them, even after they clawed up the arms of the sofa.
It never occurred to Miriam that her family struggled for money. Her father always made her desires possible, and he had a talent for molding big dreams into manageable ones. She preferred reconstructing vintage clothing from the Goodwill and she wanted to express her independence through work as soon as she was old enough. It wasn't until she was applying for college that she really understood the reality of her financial situation. It was through hard work and many, many scholarship applications and student loans that Miriam was able to attend the University of Pennsylvania.
In college, Miriam lived at home instead of in the dorms and valued every deadline and essay she had to write. As a result, she graduated magna cum laude and easily obtained the letters of recommendation required to apply for the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. The weekend she took the GRE, however, her father was hospitalized after a heart attack. Opting to work and take care of her father, she opted to stay at home longer and defer her education for a year. A year turned into two until, finally, Miriam's father insisted she take the test and finish her education instead of sitting around at home, fostering cats and a poor old dad with a bad ticker.
